##### World Bank Poverty and Inequality Platform – World Bank Poverty and Inequality Platform (PIP): Percentiles (2026)

The _Poverty and Inequality Platform: Percentiles_ database reports 100 points ranked according to the consumption or income distributions for country-year survey data available in the World Bank’s [Poverty and Inequality Platform](https://pip.worldbank.org/home) (PIP). As of September 2026, a total of 2,588 country-year data points, which include 2,407 distributions based on microdata, [binned data](https://datanalytics.worldbank.org/PIP-Methodology/acquiring.html#selection), or imputed/synthetic data, and 181 based on [grouped data](https://datanalytics.worldbank.org/PIP-Methodology/acquiring.html#grouped). For the grouped data, the percentiles are derived by fitting a parametric Lorenz distribution following [Datt (1998)](https://ageconsearch.umn.edu/record/94862/). For ease of communication, all distributions are referred to as survey data henceforth, and the welfare variable is referred to as income.

We complement the original country files available in [World Bank's Databank](https://datacatalog.worldbank.org/search/dataset/0063646/_poverty_and_inequality_platform_pip_percentiles) with regional percentile distributions, which we build from the World Bank's [1000 Binned Global Distribution](https://datacatalog.worldbank.org/search/dataset/0064304) file (2021 PPP).

##### gini

The Gini coefficient measures inequality on a scale from 0 to 1. Higher values indicate higher inequality.

Column: `gini`
Date range: 1963–2025
Sources: World Bank Poverty and Inequality Platform – World Bank Poverty and Inequality Platform (PIP) (2026)

###### How is this data described by its producer?

The Gini index measures the extent to which the distribution of income (or, in some cases, consumption expenditure) among individuals or households within an economy deviates from a perfectly equal distribution. A Lorenz curve plots the cumulative percentages of total income received against the cumulative number of recipients, starting with the poorest individual or household. The Gini index measures the area between the Lorenz curve and a hypothetical line of absolute equality, expressed as a percentage of the maximum area under the line. Thus, a Gini index of 0 represents perfect equality, while an index of 100 implies perfect inequality.

##### palma_ratio

The Palma ratio is a measure of inequality that divides the share received by the richest 10% by the share of the poorest 40%. Higher values indicate higher inequality.

The mean log deviation (MLD) is a measure of inequality. An MLD of zero indicates perfect equality and it takes on larger positive values as incomes become more unequal.

The mean log deviation. This is an index of inequality, given by the mean across the population of the log of the overall mean divided by individual income.

##### polarization

The polarization index, also known as the Wolfson polarization index, measures the extent to which the distribution of income or consumption is “spread out” and bi-modal. Like the Gini coefficient, the polarization index ranges from 0 (no polarization) to 1 (complete polarization).

### World Bank Poverty and Inequality Platform (PIP): Percentiles

Table: `percentiles`

###### Notes on our processing step for this indicator

For countries, this data comes from the percentile files [provided by the World Bank](https://datacatalog.worldbank.org/search/dataset/0063646/_poverty_and_inequality_platform_pip_percentiles). For regions, we calculate it from the World Bank’s [1000 Binned Global Distribution](https://datacatalog.worldbank.org/search/dataset/0064304): we pool the binned distributions of all countries in each region, rank the population by income or consumption, and calculate the average and the share of total income or consumption held by each percentile.

###### Notes on our processing step for this indicator

We calculate missing country values of thresholds by running multiple queries on the API to obtain the closest poverty line to each threshold, and merge them with the percentile files [provided by the World Bank](https://datacatalog.worldbank.org/search/dataset/0063646/_poverty_and_inequality_platform_pip_percentiles). Regional thresholds are calculated from the World Bank’s [1000 Binned Global Distribution](https://datacatalog.worldbank.org/search/dataset/0064304), which splits each country’s population into 1,000 equal-sized groups and reports the average income or consumption of each. We pool these groups for all countries in each region, rank them from poorest to richest, and estimate each threshold by interpolating between the groups’ averages.

###### Notes on our processing step for this indicator

For a small number of country-year observations, the World Bank PIP data contains two estimates: one based on income data and one based on consumption data. In these cases we keep only one of the estimates, to strike a balance between maintaining comparability over time and showing as long a time series as possible. This means the indicator is estimating the number of years at least one survey was conducted in the past decade, rather than the number of surveys.

## How we process data

Preparing this data involves several processing steps. Depending on the data, this can include standardizing country names and world region definitions, converting units, calculating derived indicators such as per capita measures, and adding or adapting metadata such as the name or the description given to an indicator. An indicator can therefore draw on more than one source, for example when we stitch together data from different periods by different producers, or when we calculate per capita measures using population data from a second source.
